In a significant development for Trinidad and Tobago’s healthcare infrastructure, the nation will benefit from the donation of 5,000 blood pressure monitors, provided by the People’s Republic of China.
Bilateral collaboration for health
At a ceremony held at the Health Ministry’s headquarters in Port of Spain, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, Dr. Amery Browne, and Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh joined Chinese Ambassador Fang Qiu in commemorating the handover.
Ambassador Qiu highlighted the achievement as a testament to the fruitful bilateral cooperation between the two nations in the healthcare sector.
This initiative, orchestrated in collaboration with the National Health Commission of China, Beijing Municipal Health Commission, and Beijing Anzhen Hospital, marks a significant step forward in bolstering Trinidad and Tobago’s healthcare capabilities.
A shared vision for global progress
Ambassador Qiu emphasized the shared commitment of China and Trinidad and Tobago towards fostering a community with a shared future.
Reflecting on China’s stance outlined during China’s Central Conference on Work Relating to Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Qiu reiterated China’s dedication to collaborating with nations worldwide, including Trinidad and Tobago, to tackle challenges through practical cooperation.
This dedication aligns with the overarching goal of building a community with a shared future for mankind and achieving common prosperity.
Historical collaboration and ongoing support
Highlighting the longstanding collaboration between China and Trinidad and Tobago in healthcare, Ambassador Qiu recalled notable initiatives such as the visit of the Chinese naval hospital ship “Peace Ark” to Port of Spain 13 years ago, providing comprehensive medical services.
He also referenced the dispatch of four Chinese medical teams a decade ago and the establishment of the China-Trinidad and Tobago Microsurgery Training Center.
Notably, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, China’s donation of over 800,000 vaccine doses significantly aided Trinidad and Tobago’s vaccination efforts and post-pandemic recovery.
Strengthening ties and mutual assistance
Ambassador Qiu highlighted Trinidad and Tobago’s support during the pandemic, being the first Western Hemisphere country to donate medical protective materials to China.
Additionally, initiatives like the provision of a high-performance blood donation vehicle by the Chinese government and the commissioning of the Phoenix Park Industrial Estate under China’s Belt and Road Initiative underscore the multifaceted nature of the two countries’ partnership.
As China and Trinidad and Tobago commemorate 50 years of diplomatic ties, various activities are planned to celebrate this milestone and further strengthen the enduring friendship between the two nations.
