PAHO partners with GAFFI to tackle fungal disease in Latin America and the Caribbean

In a strategic move to address the growing threat of fungal diseases in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Geneva-based Global Action Fund for Fungal Infections (GAFFI).

Strengthening collaborative efforts

The MoU signifies a pivotal step in consolidating their collaborative efforts toward enhancing the diagnosis and treatment of fungal diseases across the region.

PAHO emphasized that this agreement formalizes years of successful collaboration between the two entities, aiming to bolster patient health outcomes.

Targeted interventions

Central to the agreement is the implementation of targeted public health interventions, surveillance measures, and research strategies aimed at mitigating the impact of fungal pathogens prevalent in the Americas.

PAHO underscored the significance of these collaborative efforts in combatting fungal diseases effectively.

Comprehensive approach

Under the terms of the agreement, PAHO and GAFFI will orchestrate the involvement of expert professionals and activities at both country and regional levels.

Additionally, they will provide technical cooperation and expertise for the development of guidelines, leveraging cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) where applicable.

Building capacity and research

The MoU also encompasses initiatives to enhance training and capacity-building efforts for human resources in the field.

Furthermore, the two organizations are poised to leverage insights gained from successful pilot clinical hubs established in Guatemala and Argentina, with plans to expand these hubs continent-wide.

Addressing emerging challenges

PAHO highlighted the escalating burden of invasive fungal infections in recent years, particularly among immunocompromised patients.

Furthermore, the rise in antimicrobial resistance (AMR), notably attributed to the Candida fungus, has emerged as a significant concern, contributing to healthcare-associated infections in intensive care units.

Global advocacy and impact

GAFFI, a pioneering not-for-profit organization advocating for the eradication of debilitating fungal diseases since 2013, aligns with PAHO’s mission to bolster health systems’ capacity, particularly in middle- and low-middle-income countries, to effectively diagnose and treat fungal diseases.
