The conference, which will be held at Travellers Beach Resort, aims to connect members of the Jamaican diaspora and other prospective investors with opportunities in real estate, construction and business development, with an expanded focus on western Jamaica.
Over its first five stagings, Throp-X has supported the acquisition and sale of seven hotels in Negril, five of which have been converted into private condominium developments. The initiative has also helped more than 100 people relocate to Jamaica, facilitated more than 200 local bank account openings and assisted with over 100 Taxpayer Registration Number (TRN) registrations in partnership with Tax Administration Jamaica.
One of the developments associated with the conference is The West in Negril, formerly the Coral Seas Cliffs hotel. The property was acquired by a group of investors who met at the 2023 conference and has since been converted into condominiums. It is also home to Syd's on the Rocks, a restaurant established by one of the investors, Sydney Watson.
Throp-X founder Winthrope Wellington said the conference was established to help members of the diaspora navigate the process of investing in Jamaica, relocating or starting businesses.
"To see the relationships formed through this conference translate into property acquisitions, new businesses and people actually making the move has been incredibly rewarding," Wellington said.
He identified western Jamaica, particularly Negril and Montego Bay, as areas with opportunities for further investment and development.
The November conference will be held under the theme "Building Bridges: Investing, Building, and Belonging in Jamaica" and will introduce five new panel discussions examining investment trends and the practical considerations of relocating, building and doing business on the island.
A major addition to this year's programme is an expanded focus on Montego Bay, including the conference's first real estate tour of the city and a panel discussion on its potential as a regional business and investment hub.
The discussion will feature Montego Bay Mayor Richard Vernon and Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce President Jason Russell. Organizers said the sessions will examine investment opportunities against the backdrop of infrastructure improvements and development activity in the city.
Other discussions will explore alternative construction methods, including modular and prefabricated housing, as well as the experiences of women who have returned to Jamaica to establish businesses.
Confirmed speakers include Ronice Harrison, founder of Digitize Jamaica; Sydney Watson of Syd's on the Rocks; and Nayana Williams, founder and CEO of Lifespan Spring Water.
Participants will also have opportunities to meet real estate professionals, developers and representatives of government agencies, including the Jamaica Business Development Corporation (JBDC), National Land Agency (NLA), Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) and Companies Office of Jamaica (COJ). Property tours are planned for both Negril and Montego Bay.
The programme will also include a Getting Business Done Day, offering practical assistance with administrative processes such as TRN registration.
Attendees are expected to travel primarily from the United States, United Kingdom and Canada, alongside local investors. Organizers say the conference aims to turn diaspora interest in Jamaica into property acquisitions, business ventures and other economic activity.
Registration is open at www.thropx.com, with full conference passes, day passes and virtual access to panel discussions available.
