Skatta Burrell’s iconic Coolie Dance Riddim scores Netflix spotlight in hit comedy 72 Hours

One of dancehall’s most celebrated riddims has found a new global audience, as producer Skatta Burrell’s legendary Coolie Dance Riddim is featured on the soundtrack of Netflix’s new comedy blockbuster, 72 Hours.

The film, which stars comedian Kevin Hart alongside Teyana Taylor and comedy icon Katt Williams, has become a worldwide streaming sensation, trending at No. 1 on Netflix in more than 10 countries. Set against the backdrop of Miami’s South Beach, the comedy is packed with yacht parties, luxury nightlife and high-energy club scenes, making Caribbean sounds a natural fit for its soundtrack.

Burrell’s contribution comes through Nina Sky’s 2004 smash hit “Move Ya Body,” featuring Jamaican dancehall deejay Jabba. Because of the sampled composition, Burrell receives songwriting and composition credits on the film.

The 24-track soundtrack also includes another dancehall track, Sean Paul’s “Shake Señora,” featuring Pitbull and T-Pain.

Originally released in 2003, the Coolie Dance Riddim is one of the defining productions of modern dancehall. Produced by Skatta Burrell, the infectious rhythm became an instant phenomenon, dominating Jamaican airwaves before spreading throughout the Caribbean, North America, Europe and beyond.

The riddim helped launch and cement several career-defining hits that remain dancehall staples more than two decades later. Among its biggest songs are Beenie Man’s “Dude,” featuring Ms. Thing, one of the era’s most successful crossover records; Bounty Killer’s “Sufferer”; and Elephant Man’s “Head Gone.”

As Netflix’s latest hit continues to dominate streaming charts internationally, the Coolie Dance Riddim is once again reaching millions of listeners, introducing a new generation to one of dancehall’s most influential musical creations.
