Beenie Man’s 1997 hit song “Who Am I (Sim Simma)” has been certified gold in the United Kingdom, nearly three years after earning the same certification in the United States.

The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) issued the certification on Friday, Oct. 23, recognizing the equivalent of 400,000 units in sales and streaming.

The song reached No. 10 on the UK Singles Chart, becoming Beenie Man’s first top 40 hit in the country. In the United States, it peaked at No. 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 15 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. It also reached No. 6 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Singles chart.

The certification marks the second time Beenie Man has earned a BPI award. His song “Dude,” featuring Miss Thing, was certified silver in the UK six years ago.

“Who Am I” was built on the Playground riddim, produced by Jamaican producer and artist manager Jeremy Harding. The song became a defining hit in Beenie Man’s international breakthrough and helped establish him as a leading figure in dancehall during the late 1990s.

Harding previously recounted how Beenie Man arrived at his studio one morning, having already written a song to the riddim. According to the producer, the artiste went straight into the recording booth and delivered what Harding described as a near-perfect version of “Who Am I” in what seemed like one take.

The track appeared on Beenie Man’s Grammy-nominated album The Many Moods of Moses and helped bring the dancehall artiste to wider international attention, including coverage in major media outlets such as Newsweek.

Beenie Man later incorporated part of the song into “Girls Dem Sugar,” his 2000 reggae fusion collaboration with American singer Mýa.

The UK gold certification adds to the song’s enduring international reach, nearly three decades after its release.
