To help stop the spread of COVID-19, The Florida Department of Health in Broward County reminds everyone to practice social distancing, wash your hands often with soap and water and cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or sleeve when coughing or sneezing.
Coming up in the newscast, Florida extends ban on evictions and foreclosures, Broward County imposes nightly curfew and Jamaica reopens it borders.
Now for the news in the detail
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday issued an executive order to extend the state’s eviction and foreclosure moratorium to July 1. The statewide ban was set to expire yesterday, June 2. The ban was initially implemented in April to provide relief to those who lost their job due to COVID-19 or those that were struggling to keep up with monthly payments. The Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) reports that more than 1.8 million Floridians have filed for unemployment benefits since March. Nationwide, over 40 million people have filed unemployment claims.
In the meantime, Broward County issued a curfew order over the weekend amid protests and tense police encounters throughout the county. While the curfew order is in place through June 7th, Broward County officials say they will be assessing the ongoing need for a curfew on a daily basis. Residents are permitted to travel between their home and their place of employment during the curfew and are also allowed to walk their pets near their residences. At this time, Broward County Transit is running as scheduled.
In Caribbean News, Jamaica has finally announced the reopening of its borders. Prime Minister Andrew Holness, at a press conference on Sunday, announced that Jamaican nationals will be allowed to return home starting on June 1 while non-Jamaican tourists can visit, starting June 15. As per the protocol, Jamaicans returning from a specific list of countries, to be later outlined, will not be tested. All Jamaicans will still have to apply to come home using the Jamcovid19 website and they will be subject to quarantine. Tourists, however, will have the choice to be tested and will not be subject to the 14-day quarantine.
