This initiative is expected to usher in a new era of innovation and efficiency in milk production.

Solar power and sustainable practices

As part of the Dairy Livestock and Innovation Nutrition Programme, the introduction of solar-powered cooling systems is a key feature.

These systems are designed to enhance energy efficiency and cut production costs for dairy farmers, reflecting a shift towards more sustainable agricultural practices.

Technological advancements in dairy farming

The Ministry will also enhance the technological infrastructure within the industry by distributing 15 new mobile milking machines across various dairy farming communities.

Moreover, a technology center and an equipment lease program will be established through the Jamaica Dairy Development Board.

This program will enable small farmers to access essential dairy equipment like milking machines and silo packers at concessionary rates, promoting technological adoption at the grassroots level.

Genetic diversification and educational partnerships

The initiative further plans to expand the local gene pool by importing and distributing cattle embryos and semen, a step that could significantly boost the quality and quantity of dairy production.

Additionally, substantial investments are being made in educational institutions to foster the next generation of dairy professionals.

A total of $56 million is earmarked to establish dairy farms at various schools and colleges, enhancing their dairy programs and equipping them with modern facilities and equipment.

Targeting increased milk production

With these measures, the Ministry aims to increase annual milk production to 30 million liters by 2030, a significant rise from the 10.6 million liters recorded in 2023.

This goal aligns with the broader vision of sustaining the dairy industry’s growth and meeting emerging market needs.

Expanding the definition of milk

In a related development, the Cabinet has approved the expansion of the definition of milk to include products derived from other dairy animals like goats.

This revision aims to broaden the market and ensure that local dairy products remain competitive amidst increasing diversification in the dairy sector.
