Caribbean rums win big at 2025 International Wine and Spirit Competition

The Caribbean once again affirmed its reputation as the spiritual home of rum, as two standout Jamaican distilleries—Worthy Park Estate and Monymusk (National Rums of Jamaica)—claimed top honors at the 2025 International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC), one of the world’s most prestigious events for judging alcoholic beverages.

Rum, often considered the soul of the Caribbean, has come a long way since its rough-hewn 17th-century origins. Once nicknamed “kill-devil” for its fiery bite, Caribbean rum is now a symbol of refinement and craftsmanship, earning global acclaim for its complexity and quality—and the IWSC judges wholeheartedly agree.

This year, only six rums worldwide were awarded the highly coveted Gold Outstanding medal, reserved for spirits that score between 98 and 100 points. Two of those hailed from Jamaica, further cementing the island’s place as a global leader in rum production and innovation.

Worthy Park 109

Crafted in the lush hills of St. Catherine, Worthy Park 109 is a bold, high-proof pot still rum that reflects the uncompromising spirit of traditional Jamaican rum-making. Blended from three-year-old rum aged in ex-bourbon barrels, it offers a deep, rich flavor profile that pays tribute to the island’s storied heritage.

According to IWSC judges, Worthy Park 109 was recognized for its “intensely expressive nose, full-bodied character, and complex, lingering finish.”

Monymusk Classic Gold Rum

Also taking top honors was Monymusk’s Classic Gold Rum, produced by National Rums of Jamaica. This elegantly balanced spirit showcases the artistry of column-still rum with smooth vanilla, toffee, and tropical fruit notes. It’s a prime example of how Jamaican distilleries continue to innovate while staying rooted in tradition.

The double win not only highlights the depth and diversity of Jamaican rum but also signals the Caribbean’s continued dominance in the global rum conversation.

As the IWSC results show, the Caribbean isn’t just where rum began—it’s where rum continues to evolve, surprise, and shine.
