BPCS holds opportunity event for small business vendors

Broward County Small Business vendors

Small, Minority and Women-Owned Businesses Offered Assistance to Secure Contracts

Local businesses are invited to attend a Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) business outreach event on May 8, 2017 from 9 am to 1 pm, at the Urban League of Broward County in Fort Lauderdale.

The event will provide an overview of the new Supplier Diversity Outreach Program Policy 3330 and a 2017 Procurement Opportunities Forecast. It is designed for all businesses in the tri-county area interested in doing business with BCPS and is free to attend.

The purpose of the event, hosted by the District’s Procurement and Warehousing Services Department | Supplier Diversity and Outreach Program (SDOP), is to unveil the new Supplier Diversity Outreach Program and provide detailed information on how local businesses can learn more about the opportunities to provide products and services to the District. Business owners will also be able to speak directly with key BCPS staff about upcoming business opportunities.

“The School Board is keeping its promise to promote supplier diversity and ensure equal opportunity for local small, minority and women-owned businesses to provide products and services to Broward Schools,” said Mary Coker, Director, Procurement and Warehousing Services Department. “We are ensuring that there is a fair and balanced bidding environment and are eager to help vendors with the process.”

Register to attend the event at bcpsprocurement17.eventbrite.com or contact The Mosaic Group atevents@upscalebymosaic.com or 561.651.9565.  For more information about the Supplier Diversity Outreach Program, call(754) 321-0505 or visit browardschools.com/sdop.

The Supplier Diversity Outreach Program builds capacity in the local business community by providing increased opportunities for underutilized business to do business with BCPS, generates growth among local businesses by providing increased preferences to Small/Minority/Women Business Enterprises (S/M/WBEs), and creates jobs and career opportunities for local residents.

The adoption of the new Supplier Diversity Outreach Program followed a disparity study, completed in 2015, that identified barriers and various forms of marketplace discrimination that weakened the participation of minority and women-owned businesses.  The new policy, approved on January 18, 2017, takes effect on July 1, 2017.

Collin bets on Rajiv

Collin Maragh (R) shares a happy moment with his son Rajiv

BY Howard Campbell

When Rajiv Maragh takes the track astride Irish War Cry in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs Saturday, he won’t be short of fans.

Forty of his family and friends are making the trip to Louisville to cheer him in on in the Run For The Roses. Leading the pack will be his father Colin Maragh.

Maragh senior, 55, believes his eldest son has an outstanding chance of winning his first derby in five attempts.

“This one looks like the right one; he definitely has a good shot once he has a good draw an’ some luck,” he said.

Irish War Cry is coming from the 17 draw which some pundits argue gives him an advantage as he will not be in the early jostle.

Colin Maragh, a former jockey, expects the colt to come off the pace in the ten-furlong race.

“He has a running style that suits this journey. He can either sit mid-pack or close in the stretch,” Maragh said.

Now a trainer on the US East Coast, Colin Maragh has saddled winners in New York, New Jersey, Florida, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Florida.

Two of his three sons are jockeys. Shamir rode mainly on the New Jersey circuit but has been sidelined due to weight problems.

Rajiv is one of the US’ top jocks with over 1,600 winners. His mounts have earned more than $87 million since he started riding in 2003.

He had a life-threatening fall at Aqueduct in July 15, suffering extensive injuries that put him out of racing for sixteen months.

“A lotta people never expected him to ride again, even he’s surprised that he’s back. It’s what he loves, it’s his passion,” said the elder Maragh, who lives in New Jersey.

Like his son, Colin Maragh was born in Kingston, Jamaica’s capital. He started riding at Caymanas Park, the country’s only racetrack, in 1981 and rode over 165 winners in a 15-year career.

Messi to play in Argentina’s next three matches after winning FIFA appeal

Messi...wins appeal against FIFA ban

Argentina captain, Lionel Messi, will play in Argentina’s next three World Cup qualifying matches after winning an appeal against a ban by football’s governing body FIFA on Friday.

Messi was slapped with four match a ban after being accused of insulting a referee’s assistant.

Messi has already sat out one match when FIFA’s disciplinary committee made its ruling before Argentina’s 2-0 loss in Bolivia in March.

FIFA said its appeal committee considered Messi’s behavior “reproachable” for verbally abusing a linesman late in a 1-0 win over Chile on March 23. But the panel concluded the “evidence available was not sufficient to establish to the appropriate standard” required for the disciplinary committee to impose the initial suspension.

“The appeal committee nevertheless underlines the importance of always showing respect to the match officials, stressing that such a principle is essential in football and any unsporting conduct that may be contrary to the principles of fair play cannot be accepted,” FIFA said in a statement.

Argentina’s next World Cup qualifier is at Uruguay on August 31.

Argentina is fifth in the 10-team South American group with four games left.

The 2014 World Cup runner-up is in line to advance to a November playoff against a team from Oceania, likely to be New Zealand.

Jamaica to get speed and license cameras

Jamaica to get Speed cameras

Jamaica’s National Works Agency (NWA) is to receive speed and license plate cameras from the government.

This was revealed by Minister of National Security, Robert Montague at at the launch of the United Nations (UN) Global Road Safety Week at the Ministry of Transport and Mining’s headquarters in Kingston, recently.

The new equipment will be used to deter motorists from flouting the Road Traffic Act with the aim of reducing the number of traffic fatalities on the nation’s streets.

Between January 1 and April 31 this year, 110 persons have lost their lives in Traffic accidents. Last year the road fatality count was 379

“It will enhance the Road Traffic Act, because it will allow the courts to utilize the electronically generated tickets. We are going to be utilizing technology in assisting, because the police are low with numbers in monitoring some of the activities on the street,” Montague said.

He used the opportunity to appeal to delinquent motorists to take advantage of a new 60-day amnesty to pay fines on outstanding traffic tickets.

The amnesty will come into effect on July 1.

“We want persons to make use of it, because the fees under the new act are going to be more expensive than under the old act,” he said.

Trumpcare passed!

A gloating Donald Trump

House Republicans have passed their plan to repeal and replace Obamacare.

The measure will now be sent to the Senate, where it is expected to be significantly revised.

The bill passed the House in a narrow 217-213 vote on Thursday. All Democrats opposed the bill.

Following the House vote, House Republicans celebrated with a press conference at the White House Rose Garden with President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, and Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price. Trump touted the bill as a “great plan” even though they got “no support from the other party.”

He congratulated and thanked House Speaker Paul Ryan and praised House Republicans for coming together.

“What we have is something very, very incredibly well-crafted,” Trump said.

“This has really brought the Republican Party together,” Trump added. “As much as we’ve come up with a really incredible health care plan, this has brought the Republican Party together. We’re going to get this finished.”

Even though the bill has passed the House, there are major roadblocks ahead in the Senate, where the bill is expected to undergo significant changes.

West Indies bundle out Pakistan to level home series

West Indies' players celebrate

The West Indies’ Test team turned in a gritty final-day display against Pakistan to level their home three-match series in Bridgetown, Barbados on Thursday.

Shannon Gabriel starred with the ball as the West Indies’ seam attack bundled Pakistan for 81 to win by 106 runs and set up a deciding final test in Dominica next week.

Pakistan appeared likely to win the test and the three-match series when they limited the Windies to 268 all out to leave a fourth-innings target of 188.

However, West Indies bowlers expertly exploited a pitch offering variation in bounce to reduce Pakistan to 36-7 and sealed a comprehensive victory after a brief fightback from Sarfraz Ahmed (23) and 3(20).

Gabriel finished with figures of 5-11 from 11 overs, while fellow quicks Jason Holder and Alzarri Joseph also impressed en route to 3-23 and 2-42 respectively.

The hosts began the day on 264-9 and added just four to that total before Yasir Shah had Devendra Bishoo (20) caught at mid-off to finish with 7-94.

Pakistan survived the first six overs of their chase without losing a wicket but then things fell apart for the visitors.

Billions needed for Jamaica’s justice reform

Jamaica's Justice Minister Delroy Chuck

The Jamaica government says it will cost an estimated J$7 billion to reform the justice system by 2020.

Justice Minister Delroy Chuck, during the 2017/18 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives, on Tuesday, said this amount does not include the cost for infrastructural works and institutional capacity.

He noted that the Andrew Holness government will continue with the reform of the justice system with support from the country’s partners.

“The Justice Undertakings for Social Transformation (JUST) programme will continue to strengthen the judiciary through training, development of manuals and improvements to the system,” Chuck said, adding that the Justice, Security, Accountability and Transparency (JSAT) Project will advance the work that has been started to install the new technologies in the courts and to contribute to the timely disposal of cases and improve witness protection.

Chuck also told Parliamentarians that the Ministry will put the Alternative Dispute Resolution infrastructure in 1,000 schools.

“Many persons do not understand how important Alternative Dispute Resolution is, but we want to put it in all the schools,” he said, adding that the government will establish 14 Parish Justice Centres, which will be opened by the second quarter of the fiscal year.

“We are not unmindful of the fiscal constraints, so we are utilising existing vacant public properties to get the most out of the resources,” Chuck said, adding that more Justices of the Peace (JPs) will be trained and available to provide a better quality of service to their communities and to the court system.

Applications open for Miss Jamaica Florida Beauty Pageant

Miss Jamaica Florida

Applications are now being accepted for the 28th edition of the Miss Jamaica Florida Beauty Pageant.

The pageant has four categories and is open to young ladies between the ages 6 to 25 years, who reside in Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach Counties, single, never married, nor given birth to a child and are of Jamaican descent.

Pageant Director, Keisha Edmond, explained that while potential contestants who meet the pageant requirements live in other sections of the state, logistics would make it difficult for potential contestants from outside the tri-county area to effectively compete.

“It is not an exclusion but from past experience we have come to realize that persons who live further north than Palm Beach would have a hard time participating in the activities we have planned such as etiquette and public speaking workshops,” Edmond said.

There will be four age categories open for application:

The Little Miss Jamaica Florida (ages 6-8 years); Junior Miss Jamaica Florida (9-12 years); Teen Miss Jamaica Florida (13-17 years); and Miss Jamaica Florida (18-25 years).

The final pageant will be held on October 29.

The winners will be awarded cash prizes, make appearances at select events in South Florida during their one-year reign and will be given a trip to Jamaica.
