Highlighting the government’s preparedness, Holness revealed tools and strategies to identify and address the sources of misinformation, which predominantly include the youth.

Government action on misinformation

The Jamaican government has been actively monitoring cases of politically charged fake news and is poised to initiate action against those responsible.

With the capacity to trace those disseminating false information, especially via social media, the government is stepping up efforts to mitigate the impact of such activities.

The perils of fake news

At a recent youth empowerment meeting hosted by the Jamaica Labour Party in Ocho Rios, St Ann, Holness articulated the dangers associated with fake news.

He pointed out that even individuals with substantial education can fall victim to misinformation, unable to verify the authenticity of the information they encounter on their digital devices.

The Prime Minister recounted an incident where a young man spread defamatory content about him online, which was traced back to a political group, underscoring the misuse of social media platforms.

A call to the youth

Prime Minister Holness emphasized the crucial role of young people in fostering a digital environment rooted in truth and integrity.

He urged the youth to leverage their online presence constructively, resisting manipulative forces that propel the spread of misinformation.
