PAHO calls for intensified efforts against Tuberculosis in the Caribbean

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) issues a rallying cry for the Caribbean and other nations in the Americas to escalate their battle against Tuberculosis.
PAHO’s recent declaration underscores the gravity of the situation, positioning Tuberculosis (TB) as the foremost cause of mortality attributable to a solitary infectious agent worldwide, second only to the ongoing specter of COVID-19.
Alarming statistics in the Americas
In a chilling statistical revelation, PAHO disclosed that approximately 325,000 individuals contracted TB in the Americas during 2023, with a staggering 35,000 succumbing to its effects.
These figures mark an alarming surge of 14 per cent in incidence and a distressing 41 per cent increase in mortality compared to 2015, a surge notably exacerbated by the pervasive effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Adding to the concern, PAHO highlighted an estimated 83,000 individuals who remained undiagnosed and untreated for TB, underscoring the imperative for heightened vigilance and intervention.
PAHO Director’s plea
PAHO Director, Dr. Jarbas Barbosa, issued a resounding call to action, urging nations across the Americas to redouble their efforts in pursuit of a future where TB ceases to pose a public health menace.
Dr. Barbosa emphasized the commitment of regional countries to the elimination of TB and underscored the transformative potential of novel technologies and strategies in realizing this vision.
Innovative solutions for a timeless challenge
Among the pioneering advancements heralded by Dr. Barbosa is the integration of AI-assisted radiography for active case detection within communities, alongside the deployment of rapid molecular tests for early disease detection at primary healthcare facilities.
Moreover, the emphasis was placed on the adoption of oral and abbreviated treatment regimens as promising avenues toward more effective TB management.
A multi-faceted approach to TB elimination
Dr. Barbosa underscored the criticality of bolstering investment, fostering multisectoral collaboration, and embracing the latest recommendations put forth by the World Health Organization (WHO) to stem the rising tide of TB cases.
Regional disparities and the path forward
PAHO elucidated the considerable variance in TB burden among countries within the region, noting both the persistence of high incidence rates in certain nations and the commendable progress towards disease mitigation in others, particularly within the Caribbean.
Dr. Sylvain Aldighieri, director of PAHO’s Department for the Prevention, Control, and Elimination of Communicable Diseases, expressed optimism regarding the region’s potential to emerge as a trailblazer in TB elimination.
The role of PAHO’s disease elimination initiative
Central to this ambitious pursuit is PAHO's Disease Elimination Initiative, reinvigorated in September 2023 to address the multifaceted challenge of TB eradication.
PAHO reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to collaborating with regional stakeholders in ensuring equitable access to TB prevention, diagnosis, and treatment services.
World Tuberculosis Day
In commemoration of World Tuberculosis Day, PAHO announced plans for a high-level event, slated for Monday, wherein leaders, representatives from civil society, and healthcare experts will converge to deliberate on the opportunities and obstacles in the journey towards TB elimination across the Americas.
