Mitchell’s roadmap for the next 25 years

Prime Minister Mitchell, in his presentation of “Vision 75”, outlined a comprehensive roadmap for Grenada’s development, with agriculture emerging as a central focus.

Emphasizing the importance of food security, Mitchell articulated a bold vision for reshaping the nation’s agricultural landscape.

A critical examination of Grenada’s nutmeg industry

Mitchell challenged the status quo of Grenada’s nutmeg industry, questioning the contributions of exporting raw nutmegs after a century of production.

He pointed out that this practice fails to generate significant employment opportunities within Grenada.

Despite nutmeg’s historical significance as a key export, the industry has faced challenges, notably the devastation wrought by Hurricane Ivan.

A shift towards value addition

Recognizing Grenada’s inability to compete with major nutmeg producers in terms of volume, Mitchell advocated for a strategic shift towards value-added products.

By ceasing raw nutmeg exports and investing in local processing capabilities, Grenada aims to capitalize on the multifaceted uses of nutmeg, including its applications in food, medicine, and cosmetics.

Cocoa sector initiatives

Mitchell drew parallels between Grenada’s proposed policy shift and initiatives undertaken by Ghana and Ivory Coast in the cocoa industry.

By prioritizing local processing and value addition, these countries have sought to enhance their cocoa sectors’ sustainability and economic resilience.

Grenada’s thriving chocolate industry sets an example

Highlighting Grenada’s existing capacity for local chocolate production, Mitchell underscored the success of Belmont Estate as a model for sustainable bean-to-bar chocolate manufacturing.

With this established infrastructure, Grenada is well-positioned to transition towards a more self-sufficient and value-driven agricultural sector.
