Jamaica’s Under-17 men’s football program has landed in a demanding FIFA World Cup group, but technical director Wendell Downswell is embracing the challenge with confidence rather than concern.
Following the official draw for the 2026 FIFA Under-17 World Cup, the Junior Reggae Boyz learned they will compete in Group E alongside Italy, Ivory Coast and Uzbekistan during the tournament in Qatar this November.
Rather than viewing the group as intimidating, Downswell believes the draw has presented Jamaica with a realistic pathway to the next round.
“I’m fairly satisfied with the zone that we have. I think we have a grand chance of leaving this zone.”
Confidence built on experience
Downswell’s optimism carries added weight given his history with Jamaica’s youth program.
The veteran coach previously guided the nation to the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in 2011 and understands both the demands and opportunities that accompany football’s biggest youth stage.
For him, the upcoming tournament represents far more than a competitive assignment. He sees it as a critical development platform for the country’s emerging football talent and another important chapter in Jamaica’s growing international presence at the youth level.
“This is a unique opportunity for the youngsters to really show their talent on the international stage.”
“This is an excellent platform for them to begin at the international level, and also for the staff itself and by extension Jamaica competing in another one of the [U-17] World Cups, which is of significant importance to us as it relates to the zone itself,” Downswell told the Jamaica Observer.
Preparation now shifts into final phase
With the group-stage opponents now confirmed, Downswell says Jamaica’s focus can move more aggressively toward refining its strategic preparation.
According to the technical director, groundwork has already begun behind the scenes, but the draw now allows the staff to sharpen its planning with greater precision.
“The preparation will be of utmost importance, the fact that now we have gotten the drawings as it relates to the group that we are in.”
“We have done some work already in terms of preparation and planning; it’s just for us now to fine-tune the preparation itself, looking at the logistics as it relates to preparation going in.”
Opportunity awaits on global stage
Jamaica’s placement alongside European, African, and Asian opposition ensures a demanding and diverse challenge in Group E, but Downswell appears convinced that the team possesses both the talent and mentality to compete.
For the young Reggae Boyz, the tournament in Qatar will offer an opportunity to test themselves against some of the world’s best emerging players while carrying Jamaica’s hopes onto one of football’s grandest stages.
And if Downswell’s confidence proves justified, the country could once again find itself making noise at a FIFA youth tournament.
