World Cup warm-up: Lauderhill to host kickoff events ahead of FIFA 2026 tournament

As anticipation builds across South Florida ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026, the City of Lauderhill is positioning itself at the heart of the regional buildup, launching a two-day “World Cup Kickoff” celebration designed to tap into what officials expect will be a major economic and cultural surge.

The initiative comes as Miami Gardens prepares to host seven World Cup matches at Hard Rock Stadium from June 15 to July 18, 2026, including group-stage fixtures, knockout games, and the bronze medal final. Across the wider region, South Florida is bracing for one of the largest international visitor influxes in its history, with millions expected to pass through Miami-Dade and Broward counties over the course of the tournament.

Lauderhill’s events, scheduled for June 6 and 7, are being framed as the opening local celebration ahead of the tournament’s arrival — a regional effort aimed at uniting Broward County cities around sport, tourism, and business opportunities linked to the World Cup.

For Vice Mayor Richard Campbell, the project reflects more than festive programming. Over the past year, he has led efforts encouraging Lauderhill businesses to prepare for the economic opportunities tied to the tournament, while coordinating with Broward County Commissioner Hazelle Rogers and municipal leaders across Tamarac, Fort Lauderdale, Plantation, Hollywood, Oakland Park, Lauderdale Lakes, Hallandale Beach and Deerfield Beach in support of a broader regional approach.

“The World Cup promises a broader legacy. It’s an opportunity for our youth to participate in community engagement and to have exposure to international audiences,” Vice Mayor Campbell said.

The World Cup, widely regarded as the most-watched sporting event on the planet, is expected to transform South Florida into a month-long global hub — but its impact is already being felt at the local level, particularly in communities with deep sporting cultures.

Caribbean nationals living across South Florida are expected to be among the most active fans during the tournament, reflecting a long-standing regional passion for football that spans Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti, Barbados and beyond. Many Caribbean communities in Broward and Miami-Dade have historically turned major international tournaments into cultural celebrations, blending football with music, food and public gatherings.

Lauderhill’s kickoff programming is designed to reflect that energy.

Broward County Commissioner Hazelle P. Rogers also underscored the broader economic and branding opportunity for the region, as cities across the county align their efforts ahead of 2026.

“This activation represents a rare opportunity to join in elevating Broward County on a global stage,” Rogers said. “And to strengthen our position as a premier sports tourism destination and drive significant economic activity to our hotels, restaurants, and businesses.”

The city will host a free, two-day series of events across Lauderhill Sports Complex and Central Broward Park and Broward County Stadium, featuring youth soccer, live entertainment, food vendors and family activities.
