Parents and guardians in Barbados are reminded that the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine is currently available as part of the routine immunization program for girls and boys entering secondary school.

This initiative aims to protect young individuals from the risks associated with HPV infections.

Protecting against cervical cancer

The HPV vaccine, now administered in a single dose, offers significant protection against cervical cancer, the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths among females in Barbados.

Nearly all cases of cervical cancer, 99 per cent, are caused by persistent infections with high-risk HPV strains.

Comprehensive protection for both genders

In addition to cervical cancer, the HPV vaccine also guards against warts and other cancers, including throat cancer, affecting both males and females.

The broad protection provided by the vaccine highlights its importance in the overall health strategy for young people.

Availability and administration

While not mandatory in Barbados, the HPV vaccine can be administered to children from the age of nine, with parental or guardian consent, and is available up to the age of 26.

This measure is crucial given the high risk of HPV infection among adolescents and young adults.

Accessible at no charge

The HPV vaccine is available at all polyclinics at no cost to the public.

Additionally, it can be obtained through some pediatricians and general practitioners in the private healthcare sector, ensuring wide accessibility for those seeking this vital protection.
