Sint Maarten faces an escalating power crisis following the unavailability of mobile generation units from its sister islands, prompting the government to explore alternative solutions.
Deputy Prime Minister Veronica Jansen-Webster confirmed the shift in strategy during a national address concerning NV GEBE’s ongoing energy issues.
Persistent load shedding exacerbated by fire incident
The Dutch Caribbean Island has been experiencing frequent load shedding, which worsened after a fire on June 2 left two more of NV GEBE’s engines inoperable, causing a widespread blackout.
Although power was restored, residents continued to face scheduled power outages. In response to the incident, a crisis team meeting was urgently convened with representatives from the Netherlands, Curacao, Aruba, and Sint Maarten to discuss immediate measures.
Search for mobile generators continues
Initial hopes to secure mobile generators from neighboring islands have been dashed as the needed quantities are not available.
However, the government, in collaboration with NV GEBE’s management, remains undeterred and is actively seeking alternative sources for these units.
A swift response plan in motion
The Deputy Prime Minister announced that a rapid action plan is being finalized to acquire and operationalize mobile generation units promptly.
This plan aims to restore normalcy on the island as quickly as possible. Meanwhile, the public is encouraged to conserve energy to mitigate the impact of the shortage.
Underlying challenges at NV GEBE
NV GEBE recently highlighted that its aging infrastructure, climate change impacts, and a growing economy have significantly increased the demand for electricity.
The company operates 10 traditional power generation units, three of which have surpassed their 30-year lifespan, contributing to the reliability issues faced.
Engaging the community in dialogue
To further address public concerns and discuss the state of its electricity supply, NV GEBE will host a public information series titled “Candid Conversations with NV GEBE” on June 7.
