Earthquake shakes Antigua and Barbuda, neighboring islands

A 5.4 magnitude earthquake struck Antigua and Barbuda and neighboring islands on Wednesday morning, causing a moment of alarm but leaving no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Seismic activity details

The Trinidad-based Seismic Research Centre (SRC) at the St. Augustine campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI) reported that the earthquake occurred at 10:43 a.m. local time. 

The epicenter was located 44 kilometers southeast of Antigua and Barbuda’s capital, St. John’s, 66 kilometers north of Point-à-Pitre, the capital of Guadeloupe, and 73 kilometers east of Brades in Montserrat.

Regional tremors follow previous quake

This seismic event comes just a day after a 3.9 magnitude quake rattled the islands of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, and St. Lucia.
