Trinidad hit by two earthquakes on Sunday

An earthquake registering a magnitude of 5.1 jolted numerous areas in Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday morning.

No immediate casualties or property damage were reported.

Sunday’s rumble

The Seismic Research Centre (SRC) of the University of the West Indies’ St. Augustine campus disclosed that this seismic activity took place at 7:34 a.m. (local time), emanating from a depth of 32 kilometers.

Port of Spain, the nation’s capital, felt the tremor’s force, as did regions located 100 km northwest of Arima and 105 km west-northwest of San Fernando in southern Trinidad.

Earlier disturbance

The SRC highlighted that an earlier quake of 3.5 magnitude shook the capital at 2:13 a.m. (local time).

This tremor’s ripples extended far, being sensed 119 km southwest of St. George’s in Grenada and even 111 km northeast of Carúpano in Venezuela. 

The SRC pointed out that the earthquake had a depth of 132 km.
