Caribbean islands rattled by two earthquakes within short period

The Seismic Research Centre at the University of the West Indies’ St. Augustine campus reported on Monday that two earthquakes rattled several islands in the Caribbean within a 24-hour period.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries in relation to the seismic events.

Details of  Monday’s earthquake

Reports are that the the latest earthquake, with a magnitude of 4.2 occurred 9.45 a.m. on Monday at a depth of 10 kilometres.

It was felt 111 km south north east of Roseau, the Dominican capital, 131 km south east of Point-à-Pitre in the French island of Guadeloupe and 142 km north east of Fort-de-France, Martinique.

Sunday’s earthquake

A slightly stronger quake preceded this event on Sunday evening, registering a magnitude of 4.5.

This tremor occurred at a deeper depth of 62 kilometers at 9:22 p.m.

It also spanned a wider geographical area, with tremors felt 105 kilometers northwest of Port of Spain in Trinidad, 109 kilometers southwest of St George’s in Grenada, and 121 kilometers northeast of Carúpano in Venezuela.
