The festivities will culminate in the main events on March 3 and 4, offering visitors an authentic cultural experience that highlights the island’s vibrant history, music, and community spirit.

Mas Domnik, one of the oldest carnivals in the Caribbean, is renowned for its lively music, colorful costumes, street parades, and energetic dance performances.

With its deep roots in the masquerade traditions of formerly enslaved Africans, the festival has evolved to blend African, French, European, and Kalinago (Dominica’s indigenous community) influences. This rich mix of cultural elements celebrates the resilience and pride of the people of Dominica and serves as a unifying force that brings both locals and travelers together.

“Mas Domnik is known throughout the Caribbean as one of the safest, most affordable, and most authentic Carnival celebrations,” said Marva Williams, CEO of Discover Dominica Authority.

“This event is a tribute to our culture and heritage, and we invite visitors to experience a truly family-friendly celebration. With numerous events planned across the island, the main fetes and parades will take place on Carnival Monday and Tuesday. We also encourage visitors to stay through Ash Wednesday to take part in Tewé Vaval, a unique Dominican tradition marking the end of Carnival.”

The celebrations will officially kick off on January 18, leading up to the major Carnival events in March. J’ouvert, the official start of Carnival, will take place early on Monday, March 3, with the theme “The Rebirth,” followed by the traditional street parade.

On Tuesday, March 4, the festivities will continue with performances by calypso and pageantry winners, costume bands, and T-shirt bands, transitioning into an evening of live local music. The Carnival will close on March 5 with Tewé Vaval, a powerful Dominican ritual where a coffin representing “Vaval” (Carnival) is paraded and burned in a bonfire, symbolizing the burial of the Carnival spirit.

For visitors planning to attend, Dominica offers a range of accommodation options, many of which feature special packages for Carnival attendees. These include:

  • Fort Young Hotel: A full-service, heritage hotel located in the capital city of Roseau, offering an ideal location for Carnival-goers and a variety of unique experiences. The All-Inclusive + Island-Included package includes daily meals and scheduled excursions.
  • Villa Copthall: A boutique-style hotel in Roseau, offering a charming and affordable stay for travelers attending Carnival.
  • InterContinental Dominica Cabrits Resort & Spa: A luxury beachfront resort located in Portsmouth, offering eco-conscious travelers a wellness sanctuary surrounded by nature. The resort’s Carnival Package includes breakfast, transportation to two Carnival events, and discounts for longer stays.

Mas Domnik 2025 is also more accessible than ever, thanks to the launch of United Airlines’ direct flight from Newark International Airport to Douglas-Charles Airport (DOM) starting February 15, 2025. This new flight, along with American Airlines’ direct service from Miami, makes it easier for travelers to reach the island. Additionally, other airlines such as LIAT 2020, Sunrise Airways, Caribbean Airlines, WINAIR, and InterCaribbean Airways connect Dominica to major hubs in the Caribbean, and ferry services are available from nearby islands including Martinique, Saint Lucia, and Guadeloupe.
