Arajet Airlines, the flagship carrier of the Dominican Republic, made history this week as it completed its first-ever flight to the United States.
Flight 2100 departed from Las Américas International Airport (SDQ) in Santo Domingo and landed at Miami International Airport (MIA), marking a major milestone for both the airline and the Dominican aviation industry.
The Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft, named Los Haitises, carried 189 passengers and was welcomed in Miami with a water salute and ceremonial fanfare. The arrival was attended by officials from both the U.S. and Dominican governments, as well as airport authorities. The event comes on the heels of the Open Skies Agreement, designed to boost air travel and connectivity between the two nations.
Arajet, which has already transported over two million passengers in just 30 months of operation, is now expanding into the U.S. market with this new Miami route. The airline will initially offer four weekly flights between Santo Domingo and Miami, increasing to daily service this summer. Arajet also announced a forthcoming daily route between Punta Cana and Miami.
“This is a historic moment for Arajet and for the entire Dominican Republic,” said Víctor Pacheco Méndez, CEO of Arajet. “This first flight to Miami, the capital of Latin America, is just the beginning of our commitment to offering efficient and more affordable travel for our passengers. Connecting this city as the beginning for North America will promote tourism and business and cultural exchanges between both nations.”
Upon arrival at Gate E10, the Dominican and American flags were displayed from the cockpit in celebration.
“We proudly welcome Arajet Airlines to MIA and thank them for making Miami-Dade County their first destination in the U.S.,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “We look forward to their new flights bringing even more visitors to our community and providing another affordable option for our residents to travel to the Dominican Republic.”
Geanilda Vasquez, General Consul of the Dominican Republic in Miami, praised the launch: “This flight is an achievement that reflects the growth of our aviation sector and the increasing connectivity that benefits both Dominicans and those who wish to visit our country. I want to congratulate the aviation authorities from both countries, the Arajet team and all of those who made this possible.”
As part of the celebration, Arajet executives, MIA representatives, and Caroline O’Connor, President of Business Operations for the Miami Marlins, exchanged jerseys—one from the Dominican national baseball team and the other from the Marlins.
Arajet’s entry into the U.S. market highlights the Dominican Republic’s growing presence in international aviation and its focus on affordable, high-quality service.
