Windies skipper Rovman Powell urges Sunil Narine to reconsider retirement for T20 World Cup

Narine, who announced his retirement from international cricket in 2023, has remained active in franchise cricket, showcasing his batting skills as an opener for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Despite his impressive performance in the IPL, Narine has been steadfast in his decision to retire from international duties.

Powell revealed his efforts to convince Narine, stating, “For the last 12 months, I’ve been whispering in his ears, but he’s blocked out everyone.” Powell even sought the assistance of senior players to persuade Narine to reconsider his decision before the team selection for the T20 World Cup.

Hope for a change of heart

Expressing hope for a change of heart from Narine, Powell emphasized the importance of Narine’s potential contribution to the team, particularly in conditions favorable for spinners expected during the World Cup.

In response to queries about his potential return to international cricket, Narine remained enigmatic, stating, “It is what it is, but let’s see what the future holds.”

Meanwhile, in the IPL, England captain Jos Buttler showcased exceptional batting prowess, scoring an unbeaten 107 to lead the Rajasthan Royals to victory over the Kolkata Knight Riders. Reflecting on his performance, Buttler acknowledged moments of frustration but credited his perseverance and ability to learn from cricketing greats like Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Virat Kohli for his success.

Buttler’s innings highlighted the importance of staying calm and believing in oneself, a trait he observed in seasoned players like Dhoni and Kohli, which he sought to emulate in his own performance.
