West Indies eye series triumph as Shai Hope urges team to build on first ODI win

The Caribbean side currently holds a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, having achieved their highest successful run chase of 326 to secure a thrilling four-wicket win in the first ODI at the Vivian Richards Cricket Ground. The second match will also be played at the same venue.

Hope shared his thoughts on the eve of the match, saying, “We had some very good preparation done leading into the series, and it is now about topping up after we have put ourselves in a solid position to win the series. It will be great to go up 2-0, and obviously win the series.”

Secure the series win

He emphasized that every time the West Indies team takes the field, the primary focus must be on securing a victory. While development is crucial, Hope stressed that the team’s immediate goal is to secure the series win.

Reflecting on the opening ODI victory, Hope acknowledged the significance of the strong start and the need to avoid losing wickets in clusters. He emphasized the importance of consistently chasing scores of 300-plus if the team aspires to be elite.

Hope also highlighted the need for the West Indies team to use their innings effectively, recognizing that they often find themselves winning matches when chasing lower totals.

Wicket-taking abilities

Addressing concerns about the bowling performance in the first ODI, Hope acknowledged that they needed better control during the middle overs. He praised the bowlers for their fightback and wicket-taking abilities, preventing England from gaining momentum in the latter stages of the innings.

England, who displayed glimpses of their powerful batting line-up in the previous match, will be keen to level the series after working on their shortcomings. The performance of teenage leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed, who curbed the Windies’ batting momentum when the pacers struggled, was a notable positive for the visitors.

The squads for the second ODI are as follows:
