The Jamaican government has established the Hon. Mavis Gilmour Centenarian Honour, a new national recognition that will annually celebrate the oldest Jamaican citizen.
Minister of Labour and Social Security Pearnel Charles Jr. announced the initiative during his 2026/27 Sectoral Debate presentation in the House of Representatives on May 19.
The honour is named after Mavis Gilmour-Petersen, the former minister of education and former minister of social security and consumer affairs, who recently celebrated her 100th birthday on April 13.
Charles said the recognition forms part of broader efforts to honor the contributions and legacy of Jamaica’s senior citizens, who now make up approximately 14 percent of the country’s population.
“There are 423 registered centenarians across the island,” the minister noted.
Born in St. Elizabeth in 1926, Dr. Gilmour-Petersen is widely recognized as a pioneering figure in both medicine and politics. She made history as the first woman surgeon in the Caribbean after being appointed consultant surgeon at Kingston Public Hospital in 1960.
She studied at Howard University and later completed her Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh after graduating from Howard University College of Medicine in 1951.
Before entering politics, she served at hospitals in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands and spent years practicing medicine at Kingston Public Hospital.
Dr. Gilmour-Petersen entered elective politics in 1976, representing the St. Andrew West Rural constituency for the Jamaica Labour Party until 1989.
During the administration of former Prime Minister Edward Seaga, she served as minister of education from 1980 to 1986 before later serving as minister of social security and consumer affairs from 1986 to 1989.
Over the years, she has received several national honors, including the Order of Distinction, Commander Class, in 2004 and the Order of Jamaica in 2009.
