Jamaica’s remarkable Formula Woman driver, Sara Misir, has been named the 2024 Motorsport Athlete of the Year in the women’s category for the prestigious RJR/Gleaner Sportsman and Sportswoman Awards.
This marks Misir’s third consecutive victory in this prestigious category.
Misir, known for her dominance in the MP3 class in 2022, embraced a new challenge in the 2023 local season by competing in the MP4 class. Despite facing an early setback due to mechanical failure, she concluded the season with an outstanding performance, securing impressive first and second-place finishes at the Dover Raceway in St. Ann during the ‘Heroes of Speed’ event on October 16. She also recorded the fastest lap of the day among all drivers, clocking in at 1.25.84 seconds.
In addition to her local endeavors, Misir extended her Formula Woman journey by participating in the GT Cup Championships at the Donnington Race Track in England on September 16 and 17. Alongside her teammate Alana Carter, she achieved a commendable seventh-place finish in class at the GT Cup Championships finale held at Snetterton on October 7 and 8.
Gratitude for the recognition
Grateful for the recognition, Misir conveyed her motivation, stating, “It’s always an honor to represent women in motorsports, both here in Jamaica and internationally. It is also a team effort, and I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for the hard work of my amazing team and my coach, Rugie Misir, who is by my side every step of the way.”
Despite encountering mechanical challenges in some of the earlier events on the local motorsport calendar, Misir remains resolute in her commitment to inspire the next generation of women in motorsport. She emphasized, “I know that I represent so many women and girls who compete in male-dominated spaces, so that fuels me to keep going. I know how important this is beyond myself.”
Misir’s unwavering dedication to pioneering women in motorsport continues to make her a source of inspiration and pride in the racing community.
