Former Jamaica national footballer, coach and sports administrator Keith “Danny” Lattimore has died at age 75, prompting tributes from the country’s sporting community.
Lattimore, regarded as one of the prominent Jamaican footballers of his generation, represented the country during the 1970s and later built a career spanning coaching, sports administration and journalism.
He played alongside his brother, Arthur Lattimore, and represented several clubs during his career, including Liguanea FC, YMCA, FC Nascimento and Electro Cap in St Thomas.
A talented striker, Lattimore was also renowned for his powerful long throws, which were often likened to corner kicks because of the threat they posed to opposing teams.
Following his playing career, Lattimore moved into coaching and led Portmore Strikers to the Sherwin Williams Women’s Premier League title in 2002. He also played for RJR 720 Kickers, helping the team win the Tourers Masters League.
Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Olivia Grange said she was deeply saddened by Lattimore’s death, remembering him as someone whose contribution to Jamaican sport extended beyond his achievements as a player.
“His work at the Institute of Sports (INSPORTS) as a sports officer further reflected a lifelong commitment to the development of sport and the nurturing of talent at every level. He also worked as a sports reporter for Radio Jamaica,” Grange said.
Lattimore worked at INSPORTS until his retirement and was instrumental in the development of the Primary Schools Athletics Championships.
“On behalf of the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, I extend heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and to the football fraternity,” Grange said.
“Rest in peace, Keith ‘Danny’ Lattimore, your contribution to sports, particularly to football, is truly appreciated and will long be remembered.”
Jamaica Football Federation President Michael Ricketts also paid tribute to Lattimore, describing him as a sports icon who maintained his passion for football well into his later years.
Ricketts recalled a recent encounter with Lattimore in Spanish Town, where the former national player spoke about his efforts to revive a football club in his community.
“Even though he was getting on in years he still had the love, the passion, and the commitment to ensuring that young men get an opportunity to play football,” Ricketts said.
“So I am just deeply saddened at the passing of someone whom I would have known well and someone who would significantly have contributed to the sport of football, not just at the club level, but certainly at the national level.”
Ricketts extended condolences on behalf of the football fraternity to Lattimore’s relatives and friends.
“May his soul rest in peace as we sincerely offer our condolences to his family members and close friends,” he said.
Lattimore’s decades-long involvement in Jamaican sport saw him serve as a player, coach and administrator, while also contributing to sports journalism through his work with Radio Jamaica.
