Rutherford returns home! Amazon Warriors reunite with T20 star for GSL 2025

GEORGETOWN, Guyana — In a move brimming with both sentiment and strategic intent, the Guyana Amazon Warriors have announced the return of explosive all-rounder Sherfane Rutherford for the 2025 edition of the ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League (GSL).

The 26-year-old Guyanese native replaces left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein, who remains committed to the Texas Super Kings in the ongoing Major League Cricket (MLC) tournament in the United States.

Rutherford’s return is being hailed as a triumphant homecoming, with the Warriors set to host this year’s GSL from July 10 to 18 at the Guyana National Stadium in Providence.

From global journeyman to local hero

Few players in the modern game embody the spirit of global T20 cricket quite like Sherfane Rutherford. Since launching his T20 career with the Warriors during the 2018 Caribbean Premier League (CPL), where he played 27 matches over three seasons, Rutherford has carved out a name for himself on the international circuit.

His powerful stroke play and useful medium pace have taken him to the world’s premier T20 leagues — including the IPL, BBL, PSL, LPL, ILT20, and now the MLC, where he recently represented the Los Angeles Knight Riders.

Now, with his cricketing resume further enriched, Rutherford returns to his roots, bringing a wealth of experience and an aggressive edge to the Warriors’ middle order.

Akeal’s absence, Rutherford’s opportunity

While the Warriors had initially counted on Akeal Hosein’s left-arm spin to play a pivotal role in this year’s campaign, his ongoing stint in the United States has opened the door for Rutherford’s return — a switch that Team Operations Manager Leon Johnson views with optimism and gratitude.

“It is unfortunate not to have Akeal with us this season. He was very enthusiastic about playing in the GSL,” Johnson acknowledged. “However, we are thrilled to welcome back Sherfane. His experience of the conditions will boost middle-order batting and will go a far way in the Warriors’ charge for victory.”

With the GSL’s reputation growing rapidly as a premier destination for T20 competition, Rutherford’s inclusion not only adds firepower to the Warriors’ campaign but also injects a powerful narrative of hometown pride and international pedigree.
