Test discard Nkrumah Bonner showcased his batting prowess with his second half-century of the Regional Super50 Cup, but persistent rain played spoilsport, leading to a disappointing no-result in the encounter between Jamaica Scorpions and Trinidad and Tobago Red Force.
The match was halted at Queen’s Park Oval when the Scorpions were at 197 for nine after 46 overs in a contest reduced to 48 overs per side.
The right-handed Nkrumah Bonner played a crucial role for the Scorpions, scoring 74 from 104 deliveries, which included seven boundaries. Captain Rovman Powell contributed 48 runs from 69 balls, while opener Chadwick Walton added 23 runs at a run-a-ball.
Spinners Narine, Hosein turn tide
At one point, the Scorpions looked well-placed to post their best total of the campaign, reaching 148 for three in the 34th over. However, the spin duo of Sunil Narine (3-30) and Akeal Hosein (3-34) turned the tide with three-wicket hauls, derailing the Scorpions’ innings.
Trinidad and Tobago Red Force’s run chase never even commenced as adverse weather conditions returned during the break. Officials were left with no choice but to abandon the match, leaving both teams without a result.
The Scorpions had aimed to conclude their title defense on a positive note but struggled early on with the loss of their top-order batsmen. Bonner’s partnership with Powell provided hope, but Powell’s dismissal triggered a collapse.
Despite Bonner’s valiant efforts, the Scorpions could not recover and eventually finished at 213 for nine, while the match ended in frustration due to the rain.
