in a convincing display of both batting and bowling prowess, the Combined Campuses & Colleges Marooners secured a comfortable 121-run victory over the Jamaica Scorpions in the West Indies Super50 Cup held in Trinidad on Friday.
The Marooners posted a formidable total of 320 for seven, and their bowling, led by Romario Greaves, restricted the Scorpions to 198, securing their second win in five matches.
Greaves emerged as the bowling star for the Marooners, claiming four wickets for 51 runs in his allotted 10 overs. The Scorpions’ batting line-up crumbled, managing to score only 198 runs in 32.4 overs in response to the Marooners’ impressive total.
Walton top scores with 50 runs
Chadwick Walton was the top scorer for the Scorpions, contributing an even 50 runs. Odean Smith (35), Brad Barnes (31), and Jermaine Blackwood (22) also made valuable contributions. However, despite their efforts, the Scorpions’ batting struggles continued, leading to their fourth consecutive loss.
Akshaya Persaud, with figures of two for 25 from four overs, played a crucial role in the demolition, and Isai Thorne, a fellow Guyanese pacer, grabbed two for 35 from 5.4 overs. Leg-spinner Abhijai Mansingh chipped in with two wickets for 55 runs from nine overs.
The Marooners owed their success to a solid batting performance led by Demario Richards, Jeremiah, and Alleyne. Richards, in particular, shone with 71 runs from 82 balls, including seven fours and two sixes. The team’s solid opening partnership between Jeremiah (56) and Alleyne (51) set the stage for an imposing total, earning the Marooners bonus batting points.
Scorpions show early promise
Although the Scorpions showed early promise, with a strong start led by Walton and Blackwood, their fortunes took a downturn. Greaves played a pivotal role in dismantling the Scorpions’ top order, taking crucial wickets including that of Walton. As a result, the Scorpions found themselves in a difficult position at 123 for six at the halfway stage of their innings.
Odean Smith provided some resistance for the Scorpions, smashing five sixes in a quick innings of 35 off 20 balls. However, his effort was in vain as the Marooners secured a comprehensive victory.
In the end, the Marooners’ all-around performance, including solid batting and disciplined bowling, handed the defending champions, Scorpions, a heavy defeat. The Marooners’ win revived their chances of securing a top-four finish and a place in the semi-finals.
Looking ahead, the tournament will continue with the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force facing the West Indies Academy on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. at the same venue.
