Over the weekend, the 32-year-old was conferred with an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by the University of the West Indies (UWI) Global Campus in a prestigious virtual graduation ceremony.

The event, presided over by Her Excellency Dame Cécile La Grenade, Governor General of Grenada, celebrated James’s unparalleled achievements on the global stage and his enduring impact on athletics and Grenadian pride.

‘Humbled and privileged’

In an emotional acceptance speech, James reflected on the momentous occasion with gratitude and humility. “I am truly humbled and privileged to be here to celebrate this honor,” he shared. “When I set out in athletics, the main goal was to try to be the best I can be and uplift myself and my family.”

James recalled a pivotal moment in his life when he turned to his faith for guidance. “I remember sitting and praying to God, asking for an opportunity. I’ve never taken my situation for granted. I know it’s more than me—I’m just a small part of a bigger picture here to honor God and to inspire all of us to be the best we can be.”
