PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD — Barbados Pride marched to their second CG United Super50 Cup win in emphatic fashion on Friday, dismantling the Leeward Islands Hurricanes by seven wickets at Queen’s Park Oval.
The victory was anchored by a breathtaking spell from fast bowler Akeem Jordan, whose 5-29 from six overs sparked a collapse that left the Hurricanes listing at 138 all out in just 25.1 overs.
Pride’s reply was efficient and assured. Openers Zachary McCaskie and captain Kyle Mayers stroked authoritative half-centuries to guide the chase, sealing the result at 139 for three in only 23.3 overs.
Mayers’ toss call sets the tone
The Barbados skipper made his first decisive move before a ball was bowled, opting to field after winning the toss, an instinct that paid immediate dividends. With only three runs on the board in the second over, Jordan shattered Kofi James’ stumps for a first-ball duck, igniting the momentum Barbados would never relinquish.
Four runs later, the Hurricanes’ slide steepened when Carlon Bowen-Tuckett edged to Mayers for four, again off Jordan, leaving the innings wobbling at 7 for two.
Hurricanes swept away in stunning collapse
Things unraveled rapidly from there. The visitors crawled to 12 before losing four wickets for just two runs in a disastrous sequence of play. Left-arm spinner Joshua Bishop removed captain Karima Gore for two, and Jordan returned moments later to bowl Tyrone Williams for a duck.
Bishop tightened the noose in the next over, dismissing Mykyle Louis for four and Jewel Andrew without scoring, plunging the Hurricanes to a scarcely believable 14 for six. At that stage, only a salvage mission remained.
Lower-order resistance delays the inevitable
To their credit, Jahmar Hamilton and Nathan Edwards mounted a spirited counterattack, pushing the total beyond three figures with bursts of boundary-hitting. Edwards struck 10 fours in his 49 off 39 balls before he fell attempting one stroke too many, bowled by Javed Leacock. Hamilton contributed a patient 45 from 51 balls and was last out with the score at 138, respectable, but never imposing on a true batting surface.
Mayers, McCaskie cruise through the chase
Although Barbados lost Leniko Boucher for nine at 19 for one, the Hurricanes’ slender hopes evaporated as Mayers and McCaskie constructed a commanding 111-run partnership for the second wicket. Mayers struck four sixes and three fours in a breezy 55 before edging Edwards, who soon removed McCaskie as well, after the opener compiled a stylish 60 off 59 deliveries.
There would be no late drama. Kraigg Brathwaite (three) and Kevin Wickham (four) calmly completed the chase, escorting Pride to 139 for three and a polished, confidence-building victory.
Elsewhere in the competition
The day’s other early second-round fixture, Windward Islands Volcanoes versus Guyana Harpy Eagles at the UWI ground, was abandoned without a ball bowled.
