In a historic night at Providence Stadium in Georgetown, Guyana, home team Guyana Amazon Warriors clinched the 2023 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) title with a resounding 9-wicket victory over Trinbago Knight Riders on Sunday, marking the franchise’s first CPL championship title in six final appearances.
In a strategic move, the Warriors won the toss and bowled first, a decision that would set the stage for their triumph. They displayed exceptional discipline in their bowling, limiting the Knight Riders to a mere 94 runs.
The bowling prowess of Captain Imran Tahir (2-8) and Gudakesh Motis (2-7) shone through as they delivered economical spells, while Dwaine Pretorius left an indelible mark by claiming four crucial wickets for 26 runs.
Ayub, Hope propel Warriors over the line

The Knight Riders, on the other hand, faced a challenging task in defending their modest total. With spinners in their ranks, they attempted to stymie the Warriors’ run chase, making for a nervy affair. However, it was the duo of Saim Ayub (52 not out) and an unbeaten 32 from Shai Hope, the leading run-scorers in this CPL season, who eventually guided their team to victory.
Despite a 24-run opening partnership between Chadwick Walton and Mark Deyal for the Knight Riders, wickets fell at regular intervals, including the prized scalp of Nicholas Pooran, who fell victim to the seam bowling onslaught in the Powerplay.
Captain Kieron Pollard’s departure immediately after the Powerplay marked the beginning of spin’s dominance in the match, with Motie and Tahir wreaking havoc by collectively claiming four wickets while conceding a mere 15 runs.
Carty lone standout in Knight Riders’ paltry 94 all out
As the Knight Riders sought to mount a resistance, Keacy Carty tried valiantly, but the dwindling partnerships forced him to take more risks. His innings concluded for 38 runs with a spectacular catch by Shimron Hetmyer, and the Knight Riders were eventually bundled out for a paltry 94 runs.
The Warriors’ chase, however, didn’t come without its challenges. Losing the early wicket of Keemo Paul for a run-a-ball 11, opening the innings, added a layer of tension to their pursuit. The Knight Riders employed both Akeal Hosein and Sunil Narine during the Powerplay in a bid to snatch more wickets. Nonetheless, the Warriors weathered the storm, concluding the Powerplay at 29-1.
Ayub and Hope exhibited the stellar form that had seen them emerge as the leading run-scorers of the season. Their partnership carried the team to a historic victory, with Ayub reaching his half-century in style, smashing a six off the last ball of the chase, thereby securing the maiden CPL title for the Guyana Amazon Warriors.
