Urgent call for protection amid Haiti’s escalating gang violence
The United Nations humanitarian coordinator, Ulrika Richardson on Friday called for increased protection for civilians grappling with severe gang violence in Haiti.
The crisis has deeply affected the daily lives of residents, particularly impacting vulnerable groups such as children and women.
Displacement and desperation
Violence has forced an alarming number of Haitians from their homes, with around 360,000 individuals displaced, a significant number of whom are women and children.
The situation has worsened recently with coordinated attacks in Delmas and Gressier, which have displaced an additional 10,000 people.
Sustenance amidst strife
In response to the growing humanitarian needs, the World Food Programme (WFP) is providing vital support in affected areas.
In Gressier alone, approximately 2,900 people are receiving daily hot meals for two weeks.
Additionally, the WFP continues to distribute food in Cité Soleil, one of the most vulnerable areas of Port-au-Prince, reaching 80,000 people since the onset of the crisis.
Political turmoil and gang dominance
Since the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in July 2021, Haiti has been mired in political turmoil and gang conflicts.
The power vacuum has led to increased gang control, contributing to widespread fear and instability across the nation.
International response and assistance
In a significant development, Kenya and Haiti have entered into an agreement to deploy a Multinational Security Mission (MSS), sanctioned by the United Nations Security Council, aimed at restoring peace in the beleaguered nation.
This mission is bolstered by the arrival of 200 Kenyan police officers, skilled in rapid deployment and special operations, expected to significantly aid Haiti’s overwhelmed police forces.
Renewed efforts for peace and stability
The UN Security Council has reaffirmed its commitment to Haiti by authorizing the deployment of the MSS and renewing sanctions targeting gang leaders and their financiers.
This international effort underscores the global concern for Haiti’s deteriorating security situation and the urgent need for effective interventions to restore order and provide relief to its people.
