Technical issues with the voting system delayed voters at several Broward County polling locations shortly after polls opened at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, November 3.

The issue involved a feature that allows poll workers to electronically verify that voters receive the correct ballots. The safeguard was implemented following recent redistricting to ensure voters were assigned the appropriate ballots. The feature was also used during the August elections without any reported problems.

Broward County Supervisor of Elections Joe Scott released a statement Tuesday afternoon apologizing for the inconvenience caused to voters who arrived early and experienced delays. Scott said his team identified and resolved the issue within 20 minutes of the polls opening. Voting then proceeded normally, and the glitch did not affect any votes cast.

In an interview with CNW, Scott encouraged voters who had arrived earlier and left because of the delays to return to their assigned polling places and cast their ballots.

“I encourage you to go back to your assigned polling place; you will be able to vote. We want everybody to vote. As long as you're in line by 7 p.m., no matter how many people are in line at 7 p.m., we are going to stay open until everybody votes.”

Despite the early morning delays and weather-related disruptions, voter turnout remained strong. During the last midterm election, approximately 600,000 people voted in Broward County. Scott said he expected that figure to be reached within a couple of hours, potentially surpassing turnout in previous elections.

“It's pretty exciting to see so many people interested and engaged and ready to participate today,” Scott said.
