St. Lucia seeks solutions amid sugar shortage
St. Lucia is grappling with a sugar shortage, prompting the government to seek new sugar suppliers.
Commerce Minister Emma Hippolyte’s recent disclosure reveals the island’s struggle to procure an adequate supply from its primary source in Guyana.
Sourcing struggles
Hippolyte says 10 containers of brown sugar arrived in the country last week, plus an additional six this week.
However, she shared that there have been challenges getting the commodity from its supplier in Guyana.
Exemption to obtain sugar
In a bid to alleviate the strain, St. Lucia turns to the CARICOM Secretariat, seeking an exemption to procure sugar from non-regional sources.
This is expected to impact the commodity’s price.
