Prime Minister John Briceño has facilitated a two-year agreement between Belize Sugar Industries Limited (BSI) and Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association (BSCFA), marking an end to the deadlock that disrupted this year’s sugar crop.
This resolution comes after the government of Belize took an active role for several months, aiming to reconcile the differences between BSCFA and BSI.
The newly signed agreement ushers in a sense of optimism, with all parties looking forward to ending the recent demonstrations and road blockades.
Overcoming stalemates: The journey to agreement
Initially set for signing last Friday, the agreement faced delays due to disagreements on the economic analysis proposal, leading to a stalemate.
However, decisive actions by Prime Minister Briceño, including a focused negotiation session, paved the way for a late Monday night signing.
The Prime Minister emphasized the complexities involved in the agreement, citing the intricate details that necessitated rigorous discussions.
A new chapter for the sugar industry
Prime Minister Briceño expressed satisfaction with the outcome, highlighting the start of the sugar cane season, known locally as SAFRA.
With this agreement, Briceño said all sugar cane farmers’ associations can now proceed with deliveries.
