South Florida honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with vibrant events

As the nation prepares to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on January 20, 2025, cities across South Florida are hosting a variety of events to commemorate the Civil Rights leader's enduring legacy.

Miramar: Parade and Festival

The City of Miramar will host its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on January 20 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event kicks off with a parade around Sherman Circle at 11 a.m., followed by a lively festival featuring food, music, and a Kid Zone. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs to enjoy a special performance by R&B artist Sunshine Anderson. The celebration is free and promises fun for the whole family.

Sunrise: A Weekend of Reflection and Art

Sunrise will mark the occasion with a weekend of events, starting with the Write Your Dream: A Poetry Workshop for Teens on Saturday, January 18, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Sunrise Civic Center Art Gallery. Designed for students aged 13 to 18, the workshop offers a creative space to explore dreams through poetry, with teaching artists from the Omari Hardwick bluapple Poetry Network. Pre-registration is required.

Later that day, families can gather at the Sunrise Civic Center Theatre at 2 p.m. for a free screening of The Color Purple. The weekend culminates on Sunday, January 19, with A Night of the Arts featuring David German’s exhibit, Futuristic Echoes, live entertainment, and refreshments at the Sunrise Civic Center Art Gallery and Rotunda.

It’s worth noting that the Tina Turner Tribute Concert in Sunrise, also scheduled for January 19, has already sold out, showcasing the immense popularity of this celebratory event.

Tamarac: Community Fun and Reflection

On Saturday, January 18, from 10 a.m. to noon, Tamarac Park will host a family-friendly celebration honoring Dr. King. Visitors can enjoy live entertainment, local food vendors, and activities like a bounce house. This event, organized by Tamarac’s Parks & Recreation Department, provides a space for reflection and community togetherness.

Miami Gardens: A Day of Service

Residents of Miami Gardens are invited to participate in the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on January 18 at Rolling Oaks Park. The event runs from 8 a.m. to noon and focuses on community service projects, embodying Dr. King’s spirit of giving back. Registration is available online.

Miami: Parade and Family Festival

Miami will honor Dr. King with its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade & Festivities in Liberty City. Beginning at 11 a.m. on January 20, this year’s theme, "Don’t Give Up on the Dream!", commemorates the 60th anniversary of Dr. King’s iconic “I Have a Dream” speech. The parade will feature local politicians, performers, and community leaders and concludes at Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park.

The daylong Family Festival, running from noon to 5 p.m., will include live music, cultural programming, theatrical performances, and a marketplace celebrating Miami’s African and Caribbean heritage. The festival promises an enriching experience for all ages.
