South Florida affected by severe weather

South Florida residents have been grappling with relentless rain, causing streets to flood, traffic chaos, and significant flight delays.

The deluge, which began on Wednesday, continued on Thursday morning with power outages.

Power outages affecting Miami-Dade and Broward counties

Miami-Dade and Broward counties have reported widespread power outages.

According to reports, Florida Power & Light (FPL) noted that Miami-Dade had over 62,000 households without electricity, while Broward recorded more than 24,000 outages as of 5:19 a.m.

Airports grapple with floods

The dire weather conditions had a profound impact on travel, with Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) experiencing significant disruptions.

Terminal Drive at FLL quickly became inundated, compelling some motorists to veer off the road to navigate the rising waters.

In a bold move, others forged ahead before authorities closed the road.

Inside the airport, travelers endured lengthy delays, with more than 150 flights delayed and three flights canceled by 5 p.m.

Miami International Airport (MIA)  also reported 136 delays on Wednesday.

School closure

In response to the challenges posed by the severe weather, Broward County Public Schools took the decision to close on Thursday.

This closure allowed maintenance workers to evaluate water intrusions and ensure safety on campus. Broward County also canceled all before and after-school activities, events, field trips, sporting events, meetings, and evening classes, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

On the other hand, public schools in Miami-Dade County will remain open on Thursday.
