President Christopher Samuda has been re-elected to the Board of Trustees of the Fédération Internationale Cinéma Télévision Sportifs (FICTS), earning a renewed four-year mandate at the organization’s General Elective Assembly in Milan.

The October 31 election took place during the 44th Milano International FICTS Festival World Championship Final, which is scheduled to conclude this week in Italy.

FICTS, recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), is headquartered in Milan and has a membership spanning 130 countries. The organization uses film, television and cinematic imagery to promote the values of sport while highlighting sport’s wider cultural and social significance.

A renewed opportunity to serve

Reflecting on his re-election, President Samuda emphasized that the position carries a responsibility to serve rather than an opportunity for personal recognition.

"Positions gained should never be badges of self-praise, but treated as opportunities to serve others before self, to lead yet be guided by counsel and to inspire rather than to aspire unless one's aspirations embrace and honour the very trust that the electors have placed in you and the integrity of the office to which you are elected."

Global platform for sport and cinema

The World FICTS Challenge is the organization's flagship event, bringing together competitive film, television, cinematic and sports-cultural productions from around the world.

Samuda also chairs the championship's International Festival Commission, placing him at the center of one of FICTS's principal activities.

The annual gala ceremony in Italy has recognized an array of celebrated figures from sport, entertainment and culture. Among the sporting greats previously honored are Brazilian football icon Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known as Pelé; high jumper Dick Fosbury; Dutch football legend Johan Cruyff; pole vaulter Sergey Bubka; Russian pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva; boxer Mike Tyson; and Italian middle-distance runner Pietro Mennea.

Football club Inter Milan and automotive manufacturer Ferrari have also received awards.

The FICTS Hall of Fame extends beyond sport, with cinema figures Paul Newman, Robert Redford and Martin Scorsese among those recognized. Pope John Paul II has also been inducted.

Samuda's re-election gives him another four years on the trusteeship as FICTS continues its international work at the intersection of sport, film and television.
