Cricket legend Sir Vivian Richards has added a new international responsibility to his illustrious legacy, accepting an appointment as global ambassador for King Charles III's Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI).

The former West Indies captain was invited to represent the initiative as King Charles III and Queen Camilla joined celebrations in Antigua and Barbuda marking the country's 45th anniversary of independence.

Richards described the appointment as a tremendous honor and an opportunity to use his international standing to promote his homeland and the wider Caribbean.

“I can’t tell you what an immense privilege it is to be asked, and I have gladly accepted. I am delighted to help my country, and these islands, raise the profile in any way I can,” he said.

Cricket royalty meets the British monarch

Richards was among four celebrated West Indies cricket figures who met the royal couple during the independence celebrations at the stadium named in his honor.

The gathering brought together four former West Indies captains and cricket greats who have all received knighthoods: Sir Richie Richardson, Sir Andy Roberts and Sir Curtly Ambrose, alongside Richards.

The meeting formed part of the royal visit to Antigua and Barbuda, where King Charles is scheduled to officially open the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) on Tuesday.

The gathering is taking place against the backdrop of renewed discussions about Britain's historical involvement in slavery, including calls for an apology and reparations.

King's initiative targets sustainable global development

The Sustainable Markets Initiative was established in 2020 by Charles, when he was still Prince of Wales, with the objective of accelerating the transition toward a more sustainable global economy.

Through the initiative, the King has sought to encourage greater collaboration between businesses, governments and other stakeholders in developing markets and practices that support environmental sustainability.

The organization will have a presence at several events during CHOGM, including the Commonwealth Business Forum.

King Charles is also expected to meet participants at the Commonwealth Leaders and CEOs Summit, providing another platform for engagement with business leaders and other influential figures.

Richards' appointment gives the initiative a prominent Caribbean sporting ambassador whose international reputation and connection to Antigua and Barbuda could help bring greater visibility to its sustainability objectives.
