As the world observes Olympic Day 2026, Jamaica Olympic Association (JOA) President Christopher Samuda has delivered a message centered on courage, unity, and the transformative power of the Olympic movement.
This year’s Olympic Day theme, “Let’s Move, You Can Do This,” represents more than a call to physical activity. According to Samuda, it is a worldwide invitation for people to rise above life’s obstacles, take decisive action, and contribute to a more peaceful and connected society.
The JOA President described the theme as “a steadfast call to the citizens of the world to unite in taking confidently that first bold step in discounting the challenges of life and living and in building harmony and peace.”
He emphasized that the message is rooted in collective responsibility, a reminder that meaningful progress requires cooperation, commitment, and a willingness to embrace change.
True strength found within, not in external recognition
Samuda’s reflection on Olympic Day extended beyond competition and achievement, focusing instead on the deeper values that define individuals and communities.
He encouraged people to recognize that their greatest power is not measured by status, accomplishments, or material symbols, but by the character they carry within themselves.
“Let us understand and acknowledge that the power of the human mind, body and spirit resides within and not in outward achievements and semblance,” Samuda stated.
He added that lasting impact is not created through temporary displays of success, but through principles that endure.
“Our legacy is not in mortal edifices and encomia but in truth and integrity those DNA values that cannot be traded or purchased,” he said.
For Samuda, Olympic Day provides an opportunity to reaffirm that integrity, respect, and authenticity remain the foundation upon which meaningful legacies are built.
Honouring the federations that drive the Olympic movement
The JOA President also recognized the vital contribution of Jamaica’s sporting federations and associations, expressing appreciation for their partnership and dedication to advancing the Olympic mission.
“The JOA salutes our federations and associations in expressing our gratitude for giving us the ineffable privilege of servant leadership in moving forward a great movement,” he said.
Samuda highlighted the collective effort behind Jamaica’s sporting achievements, noting that the Olympic movement thrives because of the commitment of athletes, administrators, volunteers, and organizations working toward a shared vision.
A call for unity through Olympic ideals
As Jamaica joins the global Olympic family in marking the occasion, Samuda urged citizens to move forward with purpose while embracing the principles that define the Olympic tradition.
He called on the nation to continue upholding the ideals of friendship, respect, and excellence, while strengthening the bonds that unite people across communities and cultures.
“So, as an Olympic fraternity, as a people and as a nation, let’s move purposefully and honour the Olympic ideals of friendship, respect, and excellence as we embrace and hold fast to the eternal faith that binds us together as members of one body,” he said.
The message concluded with a reminder of shared identity and collective destiny, a vision of sport as a force that brings people together.
“One love, one heart, one movement of a people, one destiny!” Samuda declared.
