Defensive resolve earns Cavalier stalemate against Cibao FC

Former Caribbean Cup champions Cavalier opened their 2026 CONCACAF Caribbean Cup campaign with a resilient defensive performance, battling to a goalless draw against Dominican Republic powerhouse Cibao FC in a tightly contested Group B encounter at Estadio Cibao on Wednesday night.

Although Cibao controlled the rhythm of the match and enjoyed long spells of possession, Cavalier's disciplined organization and defensive resilience ensured the Jamaican club returned home with a valuable point to begin its title campaign.

The result came one day after fellow Jamaican representatives Portmore United suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Dominica's Salcedo FC. Jamaica has three clubs competing in this year's tournament, with Mount Pleasant FA joining Cavalier and Portmore after capturing its maiden CFU Club Shield title last week.

Rivalry continues to deliver tight battles

Wednesday's stalemate added another intriguing chapter to one of the Caribbean Cup's emerging rivalries.

The meeting marked the fourth time Cavalier and Cibao have crossed paths in the competition, following their memorable two-legged 2024 final and another showdown during the 2025 group stage.

Cavalier edged the 2024 championship in dramatic fashion. After securing a 1-0 victory in the opening leg, they fell 2-1 in the return fixture, leaving the aggregate score tied at 2-2. The Jamaican club ultimately lifted the trophy on the away-goals rule.

Cibao gained a measure of revenge the following year by claiming a convincing 2-0 victory over Cavalier in group-stage action, setting the stage for another closely fought contest on Wednesday.

Once again, neither side was able to find the decisive breakthrough as both defenses stood firm throughout the 90 minutes.

Defensive discipline offsets Cibao's possession advantage

Cibao dictated possession for much of the evening, finishing with 74 percent of the ball, but Cavalier limited the hosts' attacking effectiveness through a disciplined defensive display.

Despite their dominance in possession, Cibao managed only one shot on target, while Cavalier created the slightly better opportunities, forcing two efforts on goal.

The statistics underscored the visitors' ability to remain compact, absorb pressure, and frustrate one of the tournament's strongest attacking sides.

Group B begins to take shape

Following the opening round of Group B fixtures, Cavalier and Cibao each sit on one point, while Salcedo FC occupies the early lead after defeating Portmore United.

The competition resumes later this month with Jamaica's remaining clubs facing significant tests. Mount Pleasant will bow into action on August 18 against Cibao FC, while Cavalier returns to action on August 20 in a crucial meeting with group leaders Salcedo FC.
