Saint Lucia considers air connectivity with LIAT2020

Since the collapse of regional air carrier LIAT in 2020, the Caribbean has grappled with a profound loss in air connectivity, exacerbated by skyrocketing airfares.

However, a beacon of hope emerges as the Antiguan Government embarks on a transformative partnership with Nigerian Airline, Air Peace, to resurrect the beloved carrier under the banner of LIAT2020.

Antigua’s strategic collaboration

In a strategic move, the Antiguan Government joins forces with Air Peace to breathe life into LIAT’s legacy.

This collaborative effort aims not only to fill the void left by LIAT’s collapse but also to revitalize regional connectivity, which has long been marred by exorbitant fares and limited options.

Towards certification: LIAT2020’s journey

As of April 14, 2024, LIAT2020 stands on the brink of a significant milestone: nearing completion of certification for test flights across the region.

This progress marks a pivotal step towards realizing the vision of a revamped LIAT, poised to serve the Caribbean with renewed vigor.

Regional interest piques

Phillip Pierr, Saint Lucia’s Prime Minister underscores the nation’s vested interest in LIAT2020’s evolution.

While Saint Lucia refrains from immediate financial involvement, it closely monitors developments and engages in dialogue with Antigua.

The prospect of enhanced air travel resonates strongly, prompting Saint Lucia to explore potential avenues for collaboration once a definitive share structure materializes.

Investment and commitment: The LIAT2020 Partnership

LIAT2020 signifies more than a mere resurrection; it embodies a symbiotic partnership between the government of Antigua and Barbuda and Air Peace.

With an investment of up to USD 80 million earmarked for the venture, Air Peace commits to bolstering LIAT2020’s fleet with three E145s, signaling a robust commitment to enhancing regional connectivity.

Charting a course for collaboration

Prime Minister Pierre outlines Saint Lucia’s proactive stance, emphasizing readiness to engage in official discussions with Antigua once the share structure crystallizes.

Recognizing the imperative to enhance domestic air travel, Saint Lucia remains poised to explore avenues for collaboration that align with its strategic interests.

Navigating air travel dynamics

In a region where air travel dynamics often present challenges, Saint Lucia maintains bilateral agreements with several airlines, fostering connectivity to key destinations such as the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada.
