LIAT 2020 nears takeoff: Demo flights scheduled for Air Operations Certificates

As the launch of LIAT 2020 draws closer, demonstrative flights are set to take off this week, marking a significant step towards obtaining Air Operations Certificates (AOC).
Flight plans and regulatory collaboration
Interim chairman of LIAT 2020, Ambassador Daven Joseph, disclosed to the media in Antigua that the airline, in collaboration with the Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority (ECCAA), will conduct two flights this week.
These flights are crucial in the process of securing the necessary regulatory clearances.
Destination routes
Scheduled for Thursday and Friday, the demo flights will take off to St Kitts and St Lucia, respectively.
These flights serve as practical demonstrations of the airline's operational capabilities.
Onboard observers
Officials from ECCAA will join LIAT 2020 staff onboard the ATR aircraft acquired from the defunct LIAT (1974) Ltd.
The presence of regulatory representatives underscores the importance of these flights in meeting safety and operational standards.
Revival efforts and partnerships
Following the cessation of operations by LIAT 1974 Ltd on January 24, 2024, efforts to revitalize the airline have been underway.
The government of Antigua and Barbuda has taken an active role in this endeavor, recognizing the crucial role LIAT plays in regional connectivity.
Financial challenges and market gap
Despite being a prominent carrier in the subregion, persistent financial challenges led to the demise of LIAT 1974 Ltd, leaving a significant void in the market.
The partnership with Nigerian carrier Air Peace signals a strategic move towards addressing these challenges and ensuring the sustainability of LIAT 2020.
