Cricket legends Sir Vivian Richards and former England captain David Gower will bring added star power to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2026 celebrations when they serve as honorary managers for a special cricket match at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on Sunday, November 1.

The event, titled “One Commonwealth, One Team – A Commonwealth Cricket Celebration” and presented by Hamilton Reserve Bank, will feature Commonwealth leaders taking the field in a contest designed to highlight cricket’s ability to unite nations.

Richards will manage the Caribbean team, while Gower will oversee the Wider Commonwealth side.

Former rivals reunite

The appointments carry a strong historical connection. The two former captains faced each other during England’s 1986 tour of the Caribbean, a series remembered for Richards’ spectacular 56-ball century against Gower’s team at Antigua Recreation Ground. At the time, it was the fastest hundred in Test cricket history.

For Richards, the occasion will have special significance. The Antigua and Barbuda national hero will take part in an event at the stadium named in his honor, following the country’s Independence Day celebrations.

Richards scored 8,540 runs in 121 Test matches for the West Indies and captained the side without losing a Test series. His achievements earned him a place among Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the Century.

Gower, meanwhile, amassed more than 8,000 Test runs for England and led his country to Ashes success in 1985. Renowned for his graceful left-handed batting, he later established a distinguished career in cricket broadcasting.

Dehring welcomes landmark pairing

Cricket West Indies Chief Executive Officer Chris Dehring said the involvement of the two former captains would strengthen an event celebrating the sport’s place throughout the Commonwealth.

“Sir Vivian and David are two of the finest players and most respected figures the game has known, and having them alongside our Heads of Government adds something truly special,” Dehring said.

The program will continue after the leaders’ match with the Commonwealth Future Stars Under-23 contest, featuring emerging players from across the Commonwealth in a 10-overs-a-side format.

Cricket carries Commonwealth message

The celebration is being hosted in partnership with the Government of Antigua and Barbuda and the Sustainable Markets Initiative, with support from event sponsors.

Under the banner “One Commonwealth, One Team,” the event seeks to bring the CHOGM 2026 theme, “Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth,” to life through three guiding messages: “Play Together,” “Play for Progress” and “Play for the Future.”

With Richards and Gower at the helm of the opposing teams, the showcase will combine cricketing history with the wider Commonwealth message of partnership and shared progress.
