Playing surface receives positive assessment
With international cricket returning to Providence, the focus has been on ensuring the playing area meets the highest standards.
Ibrahim explained that preparations for the infield are moving according to schedule and that the rainy conditions have actually supported the maintenance process.
“Regarding the preparation for the upcoming New Zealand tour, our infield preparation is on schedule, and all is going well,” he said.
“The rainy weather is good for us at the moment; no hindrance. The rain is a blessing and keeps the grass green.”
The stadium has also received encouraging feedback from Cricket West Indies’ head curator, St Lucia’s Ken Crafton, following an inspection of the facility.
“We had an inspection from CWI head curator St Lucia’s Ken Crafton, and the report back to us was excellent,” Ibrahim said.
He added that full pitch preparation will begin later in the month, with officials expecting favorable conditions to continue.
“We have until the end of the month to start real pitch preparation, and the weather should hold by then.”
Upgrades enhance fan experience
Beyond the playing surface, significant improvements have been made throughout the stadium.
Rehabilitation work has been carried out in key areas, including the stands, Media Centre, umpires’ room, and official scorers’ room.
Several sections have received fresh painting and refurbishment, while the public washrooms have undergone major upgrades designed to match the standards expected at leading international venues.
The improvements are expected to create a more comfortable and modern environment for supporters attending matches.
A busy cricket calendar ahead
The upcoming New Zealand ODI series is only the beginning of a major period for the Providence Stadium.
Following the international fixtures, the venue will host the Global Super League (GSL), which begins on July 23, with the championship final scheduled for Emancipation Day on August 1.
Ibrahim, who also serves as President of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA), emphasized that Providence continues to maintain a culture of readiness.
“The Providence Stadium is always in a state of readiness,” he said.
“We are embarking on enhancing the Stadium, in terms of washroom facility and ground readiness etc., and the fans can expect a better experience with the enhanced facility.”
Providence continues its transformation
Construction is also underway on a new corporate box facility, adding another premium feature to the stadium.
Plans include a ground-floor area dedicated to curators and equipment storage on the eastern side of the venue, further improving operational efficiency.
As Guyana prepares to welcome New Zealand, Providence is not only getting ready for another international series, it is continuing its evolution into one of the Caribbean’s leading cricket destinations.
