PAHO Director urges continued efforts to boost vaccination coverage

The Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Dr. Jarbas Barbosa, has underscored the pressing need for sustained efforts to enhance vaccination coverage across the Americas, including the Caribbean.

Statistics have revealed that only 15 out of every 100 children in the region are partially protected against vaccine-preventable diseases.

Declining vaccination rates

Dr. Barbosa pointed to a multitude of factors contributing to the decline in vaccination coverage.

These include a misguided perception that previously eradicated diseases no longer pose a threat, a dwindling prioritization of vaccination programs, and the proliferation of misinformation, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Urgent need for recovery efforts

While acknowledging strides made in recouping lost ground, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis, Dr. Barbosa stressed the imperative for intensified efforts.

Of particular concern is the inadequate coverage for highly contagious diseases like measles, amid a global surge in cases.

Overcoming challenges

To address these challenges, Dr. Barbosa outlined a comprehensive approach.

This includes bolstering financial and technical resources, enhancing communication strategies to combat vaccine hesitancy, and fostering greater political commitment to routine vaccination programs.

PAHO’s commitment to support

PAHO stands ready to assist countries in strengthening disease surveillance, amplifying vaccination coverage, and averting outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases.

Through initiatives like the Revolving Fund for Access to Vaccines and regional manufacturing platforms, PAHO continues to facilitate access to safe and affordable vaccines across the Americas.

Vaccination week in the Americas

As Vaccination Week in the Americas kicks off on April 20, under the banner “Engage now to protect your future,” countries will mobilize efforts to reach over 83.5 million individuals with nearly 156 million doses.

The week-long event aims to underscore the pivotal role of vaccines in safeguarding public health and ensuring a vibrant future for all.

Dr. Barbosa reaffirmed the indispensable role of vaccines in fostering healthier, longer, and more active lives for individuals and communities alike.
