But Muñoz’s late intervention finally opened the door.

His left-footed finish from inside the penalty area came after the ball deflected off a Congo defender, leaving goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi with no realistic chance of making another save.

Congo goalkeeper keeps Colombia waiting

Colombia entered the match looking to build on their opening 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan, but Congo immediately showed why they had earned respect after holding Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal to a surprising 1-1 draw in their first World Cup appearance in 52 years.

The Congolese defense absorbed heavy pressure, while Mpasi produced a remarkable opening spell.

The goalkeeper denied Colombia repeatedly, making five difficult saves within the first 20 minutes and preventing Los Cafeteros from taking control early.

His performance kept Congo within touching distance until Muñoz finally delivered the breakthrough.

Six points put Colombia in command

The victory moved Colombia to six points from two matches in Group K, placing them firmly at the top of the standings.

Portugal sit two points behind with four, while Congo remain on one point, five behind the group leaders.

The result came shortly after Portugal produced their own statement performance, defeating Uzbekistan 5-0 in Houston behind a two-goal display from Cristiano Ronaldo.

Colombia’s strong start has now placed them in an excellent position heading into the final group match.

Final match could decide the group winner

Colombia will face Portugal on Saturday, knowing a draw will be enough to secure first place in Group K.

That same result would also guarantee Portugal’s advancement to the knockout stage.

The Colombians entered the tournament ranked 11th in the world and remain the third-highest rated South American nation behind Brazil and Argentina.

With two victories already secured, Los Cafeteros have demonstrated both attacking quality and the resilience needed to survive difficult World Cup contests.

Congo’s fighting spirit remains on display

Although Congo were unable to repeat their opening-match surprise against Portugal, their performance showed they remain a difficult opponent.

After returning to the world stage for the first time in more than five decades, Congo have competed with confidence against two highly regarded teams.

Their defensive organization and Mpasi’s outstanding goalkeeping pushed Colombia to the limit before Muñoz finally found the answer.

For Colombia, however, the mission is clear: one more result against Portugal will determine whether they finish the group stage as leaders, and continue their pursuit of World Cup glory.
