More Haitian migrants land in Jamaica

Approximately 30 Haitian migrants, including adults and children, made landfall in Long Bay, Portland, Jamaica on Sunday.

This marked the third such arrival in the parish this year.

According to reports, their 18-foot sailboat reached the shores at around 4:40 p.m.

Local authorities issue caution

In response to the recent landings, local authorities have issued a caution to residents who have provided refuge to the Haitian migrants.

A steady influx

This latest group of migrants underscores the consistent flow of Haitian nationals seeking refuge on the shores of Jamaica.

According to reports, Jamaican authorities believe that some of them were among the group of refugees that landed here in September and were sent back.

In July, 37 Haitians landed on Boston Beach in Portland and have since applied for asylum in Jamaica.

A search for safety and opportunity

The arrival of Haitian migrants in Portland is emblematic of the broader search for safety and opportunity faced by many individuals and families from the Caribbean nation.

Factors such as political instability, gang violence, economic hardship, and natural disasters have driven an increasing number of Haitians to embark on perilous journeys in search of better prospects.
