US Coast Guard transfers 15 migrants to The Bahamas after interdiction near Miami

The United States Coast Guard transferred 15 migrants to The Bahamas on Friday following the interdiction of a vessel carrying 19 people east of Miami Beach earlier this month.
According to the Coast Guard, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations law enforcement crew intercepted the vessel on Aug. 18, approximately 22 miles east of Miami Beach.
The Coast Guard did not immediately provide details on the nationalities of the migrants or explain the disposition of the other four people who were aboard the vessel.
Officials said migrants taken aboard Coast Guard cutters are processed to determine their identities and provided with food, water, shelter and basic medical attention before being transferred.
“This successful interdiction is a clear demonstration of our unwavering resolve to secure America’s maritime borders,” said Lt. Cmdr. Justin Dadlani, Coast Guard liaison officer to The Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Dadlani said cooperation between U.S. Department of Homeland Security agencies and Bahamian authorities plays an important role in efforts to prevent unauthorized maritime migration.
“Collaboration between the partners within the Department of Homeland Security and Bahamian authorities is a critical component of our national security strategy, acting as a force multiplier that allows us to detect and neutralize threats before they reach our shores,” he said.
“Every migrant vessel interdicted at sea is a victory for border security and a blow to the criminal networks that exploit human lives for profit,” Dadlani added.
The Coast Guard said it continues to maintain an air, land and sea presence alongside its Operation Vigilant Sentry partners in the Florida Straits, Windward Passage, Mona Passage and Caribbean Sea.
Operation Vigilant Sentry is aimed at preventing unauthorized maritime entry into the United States and its territories while protecting lives at sea, the Coast Guard said.
